Professor Lipp's study has been motivated by the fifth centenary of the `discovery' of America. It consists of a series of essays, independent of one another, yet connected by a dominant theme, namely the `essence' or identity of America, both North and South. Secondary themes centre round the personality of the inhabitants: studies in characterology, attitudes and images, stereotypes and impressions, as well as interrelationships between the two Americas. Brazil has been excluded from the study, but a section on Canadian attitudes is included. The project utilizes material from a variety of disciplines; history, sociology, political science, philosophy and literature. SOLOMON LIPP is Professor Emeritus of McGill University (Montreal).
