Synopsis

The lives led by villagers, farmers, craftsmen and the lord of the manor are seen partly through the eyes of contemporary artists and writers. Country women fetch water from the well, gossip on doorsteps, tend the flowers and beehives in their gardens, knit and make lace as cottage industries. Children from an early age share in the work of the cottage and the farmyard, play on the green and in the dusty lanes, and go, somewhat unwillingly, to the dame school. Men work at a trade or on the land, ploughing, sowing and reaping, and for the harvest are joined by all the family. The rhythm of life in the village is broken from time to time by the visits of peddlers and entertainers, by the days when animals and farm and garden produce are loaded on to carts and taken to market, and by fairs and the round of Church and farming festivals: Plough Monday, Mothering Sunday and Christmas.
