Egyptian motifs that turn a bathroom into an ancient dream. Pictures of clowns, jack-in-the-boxes, and dinosaurs to cheer a child's room. Mystic designs like a zodiac wheel for a sense of peace and harmony. Stencils bring atmosphere to every area in the home, wonderfully transforming walls, picture frames, vases, fabrics, and furniture. And with more than 200 inspiring patterns from the best-selling author of several stenciling books, there's something to suit every lifestyle and get creative juices flowing. Themes are drawn from classic period pieces, like heraldic beasts and shields; nature's flowers, fruits, and animals; the grace of the human form (including art nouveau dancers); boldly geometric abstractions; and locations around the world. With instructions on materials, techniques, and creating your own designs, here's the source for stenciling knowledge and inspiration. 144 pages (all in color), 8 1/2 x 11.

"Once you have successfully stencilled your first petal," declares Patricia Meehan, "you can go on to stencil the whole garden. The techniques are the same no matter how complex your design." Meehan's book lives up to this promise: her elaborate-looking stencil designs are surprisingly simple, and though she does not provide step-by-step directions, she does offer a multitude of wonderful stencil patterns and countless good ideas for utilizing them around the home. Stencil some heraldic designs around the den, for instance; brighten the atmosphere with a mass of glowing candles (without the fire hazard); add a vibrant flower border to the floor; or fill a child's wall with charming dancing mice. Meehan's striking patterns and eye-catching colors are a delight to browse through, and she shows many finished rooms so readers can see the designs in context. As the title indicates, this is not so much a how-to guide as a font of inspiration, and even novice stencilers with the right amount of patience and practice can produce very attractive stenciling by taking their cues from Meehan's highly creative approach. --Amy Handy
Stenciled decoration has had a revival in recent years, and stenciling supplies are now available in many craft shops. Stencilling for the First Time emphasizes practical techniques using purchased stencils and a variety of applicators and paints. Techniques are described through a series of easy projects for decorating furniture and household items. The Creative Stencil Source Book has templates for cutting one's own stencils and includes photos and suggestions as to how they may be used. The motifs include plants, animals, and historical subjects. There is a short chapter on materials and techniques. Both books would be useful in public libraries, Carter's as the first choice for collections lacking other stenciling titles and Meehan's as a good complement to any introductory title.
