('The Triumph is as delightful to read as it is disturbing to think about ... Beyond its wit and hilarity, it is the most devastatingly accurate account we have of the way American foreign policy is made.' Arthur M. Schlesinger
The Triumph is a satirical fiction of political rebellion and US intervention in Latin America. Puerto Santos is the site of a blossoming popular rebellion... For years the country has been ruled by Martinez, a corrupt dictator who is nonetheless championed by the US State Department as a bulwark against communism. When the government is overthrown by Miro, a liberal whose dangerous policies include basic democratic principles and modest land reforms, Secretary Campbell loses no time in taking charge of the situation in truly American diplomatic style with results not even he could have foreseen)
