From the Back Cover

Since the nineteenth century and the arrival of mass travel, the need for transport architecture has spawned some of the most impressive structures of recent times. As all forms of travel - air, rail, road and water - continue to expand, the ever-growing numbers of passengers and carriers moving around the world are presenting today's engineers and architects with greater challenges than ever before.

Transport, Engineering and Architecture is the second book in a series which explores the relationship between engineering and architecture, and is produced in association with Arup, the largest firm of consulting engineers in the world. The book is divided into chapters devoted to themes such as planning transport systems, bridges, airports and aviation, railways, interchanges and road transport. Within each chapter the author presents a selection of detailed case studies - all built in association with Arup - to illustrate each theme. Featured structures include the Oresund bridge linking Denmark to Sweden, Chek Lap Kok Airport in Hong Kong and the new Penn Station in New York. Building designs are by such world-renowned architects as Foster and Partners, Richard Meier, Skidmore Owings and Merill, Nicholas Grimshaw and Partners, van Berkel and Bos and Terry Farrell.
