Gr 1-3-These introductions to two endangered animals are serviceable at best. The oversized, highly pictorial volumes tell a story that basically follows their respective subjects throughout the course of a year. Each double-page spread offers a fold-out flap that uncovers some additional ``fun facts.'' The illustrations are passable, with cartoonlike drawings. There is no table of contents, but an index that generally lists words and phrases from the text is appended. With authors like Jean Craighead George, and an array of fine nature books so easily available, there is little reason to compromise standards on didactic and poorly conceived pieces such as these.-Janet O'Brien, Mount Pleasant Public Library, Pleasantville, NY
