PreSchool-K-- Double-page spreads in an oversized format jumble numbers, shapes, sizes, occupations, weather, and object identification, apparently trying to include as many concepts as possible in one incoherent whole. Each busy scene represents a familiar childhood experience or milieu, such as a birthday party, a checkup at the doctor's office, a play-school classroom, a bedroom full of toys, and a picnic. In all, there are things to count, name, find, and/or evaluate. The number section is the clearest, with well-defined, jaunty objects to enumerate, but the text is chaotic. Even the endpapers, which are intended to demonstrate the alphabet, have some of the letters out of order. The minimal text contains a few simple questions and statements, occasional dialogue in balloons, and some unfortunate grammar ("What number house do you live at?"). The crowded ink-and-watercolor cartoons lack the charm of Peter Spier or even Richard Scarry's artwork; the concepts have none of Tana Hoban's clarity of execution. --Patricia Pearl Dole, formerly at First Presbyterian School, Martinsville, VA
