The most important lesson I learnt in my long battle was that I am my nervous system, literally. It is our core, our centre, our dynamic, and the state of the nervous system determines our state of mind, our attitude to life, everything. This book is basically about learning to take such care of this central hub of our lives that a new person can emerge to experience the world in an entirely different way.
Ignore the cynics carping at you tussling with your teabags in posh restaurants, clubs and pubs (when you've recovered enough to go in them again, though you'll probably find them as smoky and repulsive and irrelevant as I do now)....Part of your cleansing process is clearing out the debris from your social system too, and any negative lurking presences must be dismissed as ruthlessly as you've eliminated poison from your body.
This is the rugged individualist's guide to overcoming addiction, which often flies in the face of traditional forms of recovery. Anne McManus is funny, inspiring and tough-she's been to hell and back and wants to help you find your way out of there, too. A British 1960s radical, Anne "cured" herself of her addictions by coming up with a rigorous program of total abstinence from alcohol, drugs, nicotine, caffeine; a diet that is basically fish, fruit, vegetables and cereals; exercise, meditation and yoga; positive thinking and a real hunger for change. She does not recommend therapy or support groups, calling AA "the pub with no beer," and instead urges women to get to know and love themselves through solitude, relaxation and meditation. Her "no coddling, no compromise" approach is sometimes startling, even frightening, but if you are deadly serious about saving your life, you could learn a lot from Anne. -- From The WomanSource Catalog & Review: Tools for Connecting the Community for Women; review by Laurie Ryan
