Synopsis

Goodall, Dominic (editor). Hindu Scriptures. London, Phoenix Giant, 1996. 15.5 cm x 23.5 cm. XLVII, 411 pages. Original softcover. Excellent condition with only minor signs of external wear. Slightly grubby page-edges. Clean inside with intact binding. Includes for example the following Introduction / Guide to Pronunciation / From the Rig-Veda / From the Atharva-Veda / From the Upanishads / The Bhagavad-Gita / From the Yajnavalkya-Smrti / From the Kirana-Tantra / From the Bhagavata-Purana etc. Hindus are famously not people of one book and the scriptures they revere are enormously varied. With the addition of three fresh translations, including one work which appears for the first time in English, this new and expanded edition of Zaehner`s invaluable anthology now spans more than twenty centuries and ranges from arcane hymns of the ancient Aryans and prescriptions that govern every aspect of the daily life of the orthodox, to rich poetry that describes with heady sensuality the dalliance of Krsna and the cowherd women of Vraja on the nights of the autumn moon.
