Synopsis
Violence in and around schools is a global phenomenon, but the gender dimension has been largely ignored. This is the first a comprehensive account of the nature and scale of gender violence in school settings across the world.
The book will increase awareness and understanding of gender violence in school settings but it also presents innovative strategies to address it. Many chapters focus on participatory methodologies for working with young people on reducing violent and abusive behaviour in school, including through curriculum development and teacher education. Other chapters deal with gender, youth, and sexuality in the context of HIV/AIDS.

About the Authors
Fiona Leach is senior lecturer in international education at the University of Sussex and author of Practising Gender Analysis in Education and co-editor of Education, Cultures and Economics: dilemmas for development (with A. Little). She has done extensive research in the area of gender violence in schools in Africa.
Claudia Mitchell is professor of education at McGill University and the author of numerous books on youth, gender, gender violence, and girlhood and popular culture, including Researching Children’s Popular Culture: Cultural spaces of childhood (with J. Reid-Walsh) and That’s Funny You Don’t Look like a Teacher: Interrogating images of identity in popular culture (with S. Weber).
