Comic, colorful, and succinct, with short text-bytes, lots of pictures, and jokey captions, this is a brilliant introduction to the story of Ireland. From its pictorial endpaper maps to the panels of "Irish Icons" ranging from Brian Boru to the Abbey Theatre, it is packed with useful and fascinating information. A story that is often complicated and turbulent is told with sensitivity and clarity, from the first legends right up to the present day. The Story of Ireland is the follow-up to Richard Brassey and Stewart Ross's The Story of Scotland, which won the Saltire Society/TES Award for Educational Publications and the Scottish Arts Council Children's Book Award.

Richard Brassey is the author and illustrator of a host of colourful and original non-fiction books for children, among them the bestselling Nessie the Loch Ness Monster and The Story of Scotland, which won the TES/Saltire Society Award. He lives in Essex. SALES POINTS * There is no comparable history of Ireland for primary school age children * Richard Brassey has a great sales record * Subject treated with authority and sensitivity
Gr. 3-5. Brassey and Ross offer children a quick, colorful, and completely painless introduction to the history of Ireland. Beginning with the supercontinent Pangaea and fast-forwarding through dinosaur days and the Ice Age, the story really gets going in 3500 BC, chronicling the history of invasions, occupations, and rebellions and continuing into modern times. In the main text, the succession of rulers unfolds while comics-style panels show characters playing out scenes and commenting on events, often in witty ways. Illustrated sidebars carry short biographies and bits of information about Irish "icons" such as Tara, the Book of Kells, and Guinness. The many small illustrations on each double-page spread create the book's charm and pizzazz. Although the short text is hardly comprehensive, it is surprisingly informative. Appealing and accessible.
