A beautifully written and photographed book with a tremendously broad coverage of the Impressionist period. This book offers great overall view of the historic facts along with detailed illustrations and photographs of paintings of the various artists work. Prior to the audacious Impressionist paintings art was perceived and painted as an optical version of reality. This group of French artists, later called 'The Impressionists' radically challenged and revolutionised art. This book clearly offers the reader a glimpse of the modernisation of Paris with paintings depicting the popular leisure activities such as strolling in the park, visiting bars, cafes and brothels, attending the theatre, boating on the lake, travel by steam trains and of course Degas' race meetings. Large and sometimes double page-size paintings by Monet, Degas, Pissarro, Renoir, Berthe Morisot, Cezanne and some of the lesser known artists such as Guillaumin and Boudin. The book concludes with a chronology of the artists showing their year of birth and death and summarises the French art world and important world events from 1855 to 1890.
