Synopsis
The annual Royal Institute of British Architects awards celebrate the best contemporary architecture by British architects building both in the UK and elsewhere in the European Union. In 2003 some seventy projects gained RIBA awards: collected in this book, they make up a fascinating survey of the best current work, extremely diverse in terms of scale and building type, and illustrate the achievements of many young practices, as well as those of established firms. All the successful projects - among them schools, social housing, private houses, a hospital, art galleries, university buildings, a factory and several visitor centres - are described, evaluated and pictured here. They include the winners of a series of further prizes for, among other things, sustainability, conservation, access, and small projects. The six buildings shortlisted for the Stirling Prize, the UK's most prestigious architectural award, are featured in even more depth. This year they range from a tiny shelter for ferry passengers on a Scottish island to energy-efficient housing in the Home Counties, major buildings for culture, and city offices. Their budgets range from a modest £95,000 to £100 million.
