Synopsis

Hanna Sheehy Skeffington was one of the most remarkable of all the activists produced by revolutionary Ireland. This book traces her political development drawing on previously unpublished writings and letters.Hanna grew up in an intellectually stimulating atmosphere where she was encouraged to regard women as equal to men. She helped to found the militant Irish Women's Franchise League to support women's fight for the vote. Her father remained a loyal representative to the British House of Commons throughout Hanna's repeated imprisonment's and hunger strikes. This caused a rift between them that deepened as Hanna increasingly allied herself with her Uncle Eugene, a Catholic priest and prominent Feinian.Hanna's disillusionment with conventional politics grew and she actively supported the 1916 Rising. She later became assistant editor of An Phoblacht and Republican File. This book shows the enormous contribution she made to the Nationalist struggle and suffrage movement both within Ireland and internationally.
