Gr 9 Up-This book is printed in sans serif type in a small font and features color photos of Jones (primarily his hands) demonstrating mainly card and coin tricks. After a brief history of magic and prestidigitation, the author introduces the tricks and emphasizes the need to develop a patter to distract the audience and the need to practice both. Necessary items are listed, and each step is carefully explained. Tricks of the trade are shown as well. A diligent student could put a show together with the repertoire shown in this volume.

Gr. 5-8. Clear, well-sequenced color photographs and a concise, understandable text are the hallmarks of this book of close-up magic tricks. The tricks require only a few simple props (a deck of cards, rope, coins, a cup--no rabbits or top hats are required), so the budding magician can get started right away. Most of the tricks are covered in a single page or on two pages, with easy-to-follow directions for each trick. The book begins with a sophisticated introduction describing the history of magic through the centuries. A list of a few magic shops and magic clubs is appended; but since this is a British import, most of these are in England. Also appended are a glossary of magic terms and a list of further readings that is mostly confined to one publisher. A good source for any magic collection that needs a boost. Todd Morning
