Synopsis

The Italian Riviera may not have the recognition of its more famous French equivalent, but as Cadogan's unique guide will show travelers, it has all the ingredients for a breathtaking trip. Explore one of nature's most perfect suntraps, with its Neopolitan climate, diverse landscape, and dazzling coastline. The key cities range from glamorous Portofino to medieval Genoa, home of pesto, noble palaces, art-filled churches, and Italy's busiest ports. Along the way, visitors can also take in stylish Santa Margherita, the museum of the Antarctic, the biggest aquarium in Europe and charming hilltop towns. Written by Italian travel experts, this guide brings them both the vibrant and the tranquil sides of the Riviera and now also takes them further afield to Piemonte with its surprising Baroque art city, Turin, and through the green rolling landscape, home to some of the best vineyards in Italy.

From the Back Cover

The Italian Riviera means Liguria, which like a vial of essential oil conserves a concentrated dose of Mediterranean sensuality: mountains plunging into the sea, painted fish ports and fleshpot resorts decked in flowers; at the table the birthplace of pesto offers a fresh, zesty cuisine. Yet just beyond the Riviera's sleekest clichés -- Portofino and Portoverne, sassy San Remo, and the fabled Cinque Terre - there awaits a secret world of deep forests, hilltowns teetering on impossible brinks, olive groves and vineyards. In Genoa the scene changes again: piled high over the sea, Italy's great port is also the most under-rated art city, boasting one of the largest medieval centers in Europe, and the sparkling rebuilt Porto Antico. And now the guide also takes you to Piemonte with it surprising Baroque art city, Turin, and through the green rolling landscape, home to some of the best vineyards in Italy.

'Italians are famously anarchic behind a wheel. The only way to beat the locals is to join them by adopting an assertive and constantly alert driving style. All drivers from boy racers to elderly nuns seem to tempt providence by overtaking at the most dangerous bend, and no matter how fast you are hammering along the autostrada, plenty will whiz past at supersonic rates.'
