Alex Martin is a writer, teacher and broadcaster, and a frequent traveller to Greece. Born in the USA of a Greek mother and British father, he is connected to Greece by 'family ties, curiosity, and an overwhelming love of the place'. His other works include children's stories, English Language Teaching texts, and books on travel, history and cooking.
'Greece is a magical country...Travellers in search of relaxation, pilgrims to the fabled sites of Delphi, Knossos, Olympia, Epidaurus, even visitors on business, tend to find themselves, often at the most unexpected moments...being suddenly overtaken by a feeling of complete well-being, of belonging on the earth.'
'In the private social world of Greece, good manners are greatly appreciated and valued. The traditional courtesies of shaking hands, standing when someone enters the room, saying please and thank you, allowing women to pass through doorways before men and so on, are still observed, particularly among older people. The young are more straightforward but still generally well mannered.
In public - and particularly in towns - it is a different story. Without distinction of age, people seem to go out of their way to be rude. You find this in shops, in the street, on buses, ferry boats and aeroplanes, and most especially when driving. Even in restaurants, relations between customer and staff can be surprisingly blunt.
There is no need to be alarmed by this - it is nothing personal, it is just the way things are done - but it does leave the problem of how you should behave in return. Mastering the precise degree of brusqueness when trying to catch the attention of the waiter is quite an art: if you are too mild, he will ignore you; if you are abusive, he will take offence and ignore you just the same. Be firm and decisive, but not too rude, is a good rule.'
