Synopsis

Java provides versatile technologies for data access and manipulation. This book investigates these technologies in detail and shows how they can be used to develop robust enterprise applications.

The book is divided into five sections, the first of which looks at data and object modeling. The second section investigates accessing data in relational and object oriented databases, and directory services. The focus of the following section is data presentation for web clients. The fourth section covers Enterprise JavaBeans and distributed applications. The last section of the book consists of four real-world case studies that build on the previous chapters of the book. Transactions, performance, and scalability of data applications are also discussed throughout the book.

About the Author

Thomas Bishop is founder of Integral Software Technologies Inc. which assists businesses in leveraging technology solutions to increase organizational efficiency, decrease service delivery time, and to better serve their customers. Thomas has over 20 years experience in the software industry and has worked in all phases of the software development life-cycle. He has been a consultant for AT&T Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies, Tandem Telecom, Siemens Energy and Automation, EDS and the Federal Government among others. He has obtained both a Master's and a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science. His current technical interests are distributed software architectures, component technologies and Internet protocols.

Glenn E. Mitchell II wears several different hats. To the undergraduate students at the University of South Florida, he's Dr. Mitchell. He prefers "Mitch", and that's what his colleagues and graduate students call him. In addition to being a faculty administrator at USF, Mitch is also a consultant, writer and speaker. His consulting firm is called .Com Consulting Group.

He co-authored another title for Wrox this past winter, "Professional Oracle 8i Application Programming") and he is hard at work on a third book for us. He also writes lots of articles and speaks at professional conferences. He is a technical evangelist on object-oriented analysis/design, C++, Java, .NET, Visual Basic, and Microsoft SQL Server. John Bell is a Principal Engineer at Latitude360, a subsidiary of RWD Technologies. In a career spanning more than 20 years he has developed and delivered custom, embedded, commercial and web-based software solutions on a variety of platforms. He has served on the IEEE committee for the IDEF1X97 Object Modeling Standard and has taught courses in Object Oriented Design and Development. He has been developing Java based web systems for three years and has been supporting DaimlerChrysler as lead architect for a number of Java based web platform initiatives.

Bjarki Hólm is a software engineer, living in Reykjavík. Bjarki works as one of two chief system architects for Vyre Corporation. His current work includes the development of Vyre's new generation of content management systems, using J2EE and XML technologies. Bjarki's main areas of technical interest include Java technologies, XML and Oracle.

Danny Ayers is a network consultant and freelance author, generally occupied with Java and web-related tasks, despite considerable determination to spend more time in a deck chair.

Carl Calvert Bettis entered his programming career through the backdoor, starting in customer service at a small computer publishing company. He is currently an applications developer for IMWorth in Kansas City, Missouri.

Sean Rhody is a Partner with Computer Sciences Corporation, where he serves as a program architect for CSC Consulting Group. Sean is actively involved in the design, development and delivery of distributed systems in a number of industries.

Sean is also the founding editor of Java Developers Journal and the chief corporate editor for Sys-Con Publications, which publishes the Java Developers Journal, as well as the XML Journal, Wireless and Business Technology and Cold Fusion Developers Journal. Tony Loton graduated in 1991 with a BSc. Hons. degree in Computer Science with Management. He has worked in I.T. for almost ten years, with last five years being devoted almost entirely to Enterprise Java, CORBA, Unified Modeling Language and associated technologies. Through the years, Tony has been seen in various guises as a (managing) consultant, technical architect, course instructor, technical writer, and amateur salesman.The writing bug has bitten, and - prior to his bookwork - Tony's writing has been featured in several Java journals.

Michael S.Michael has nearly twelve (12) years of technology and business expertise, and has a wealth of experience with a wide variety of database, client, server, and middle-tier technologies.

Mark Wilcox is the Web Administrator and LDAP Consultant for the University of North Texas. He is a frequent writer and speaker on LDAP and directory services. Also, Mark is one of the few people to have been paid to write open source software.

Kelly Lin Poon is a software developer who loves to program and learn about new technologies. She is pursuing a degree in Computer Science at the University of Waterloo.

Nitin Nanda works as associate project manager in R & D Centre of Quark, Inc. based at Chandigarh, India. Here he is responsible for design and development of a product targeted for print catalog market. This product is engineered in Java with RMI as the underlying protocol. He completed his B.S. from Panjab University, Chandigarh in 1993 and was working in Cadence Design Systems prior to joining Quark.

He has been contributing articles in premier Java magazines like Java World, Java Developer's Journal and Java Report.

Rick Grehan is a technical evangelist at Compuware/NuMega Labs, where he works with both the DriverStudio and DevPartner for Java groups. Rick also writes the "Java To Go" column for JavaPro Magazine.

Prior to coming to NuMega, Rick was with Metrowerks, Inc., where he worked on the Discover DSP project. Rick also did a stint as senior editor for Computer Design Magazine, and an even longer stint (about 12 years) as the Technical Director of BYTE Labs for BYTE Magazine. At BYTE, he was also the author of the JavaTalk column. Rick's articles have appeared in EDN, Embedded System's Programming Magazine, Microprocessor Report and Forth Dimensions. He has co-authored two books, helped with editing several others and contributed definitions to two Computer Science encyclopedias.

Matthew Ferris is an independent consultant in Chicago, and served for 2 years as President of the Chicagoland Java User Group. He has written articles for ServletCentral.com, the Web Developer's Journal, the O'Reilly Java Network, and was a contributing author to the Wrox title Professional Java Server Programming. Matthew also serves as Midwest Editor for Wireless Business and Technology, and recently founded the Chicago Wireless Developer User Group.
