Irresistibly charming, recklessly brilliant, the Fitzgeralds epitomized everything that was beautiful and damned about the Jazz Age. This is the story of Zelda Sayre, a talented and beautiful Southern belle who captured the heart of writer F. Scott Fitzgerald, celebrated author of "This Side of Paradise" and later, "The Great Gatsby". Taylor reveals the lives of a couple who took New York by storm in an flamboyant explosion of excess. They were the ultimate "it" couple - partying hard, living fast, travelling widely and drinking far too much. After riding the New York rollercoaster, they jaunted over to Paris and the French Riviera, then back to Hollywood, always spending more than they were earning and existing one step away from catastrophe. Ten years into the marriage, things began to crumble and Zelda - her own rich artistic talents unfulfilled - had the first of many breakdowns. Scott embarked upon the first of many affairs. Their story recalls an age where "anything went" but at considerable cost. Kendall Taylor writes with sympathy and insight, including appearances by Gertrude Stein and Ernest Hemingway, among others. The author began her own research by interviewing many of the Fiztgeralds' acquaintances, and Zelda's friends and family.

Kendall Taylor, Ph.D., a cultural historian, has been a professor and museum curator. Her interest in Zelda Fitzgerald began thirty years ago when she was a graduate student and read Arthur Mizener's Biography of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Noting that Mizener's study left Zelda's life largely undocumented, Taylor began her own research by speaking with many of the Fitzgeralds' acquaintances and conducting interviews with Zelda's friends and family.

SYNOPSIS: Scott Fitzgerald became famous in the 1920s, capturing the frenzy of the times he named the Jazz Age in novels and stories featuring flamboyant young women called flappers. Once he met beautiful, reckless Zelda Sayre, he based all of these characters on Zelda, her diaries, her letters, her life. Married, the Fitzgeralds were the darlings of the literary and theatrical elite. They drank excessively, partied outrageously, jumped naked into public fountains; and then, Kendall Taylor tells us, it all fell apart. As Scott neglected Zelda to write or to drink, she turned to love affairs, then desperately tried to find valuable work of her own. Within ten years of their marriage Zelda was hospitalized with the first of many breakdowns and Scott, once called the greatest writer of his generation, was on his way to being an incurable alcoholic. Working from previously undisclosed information, Kendall Taylor demonstrates that while Zelda was essential to Fitzgerald's oeuvre, his use of her life in his fiction irreparably damaged whatever chance she had of realizing her own talent -- and that her retreat into madness was how she managed to survive. It is what Zelda meant when she wrote, about her art, and by extension her life: sometimes madness is wisdom. Seller Inventory # U551
