Coastal gardening presents its own unique set of problems and opportunities. In this book the author takes you through the process of designing, building, maintaining, and making the most of your own coastal garden. Topics covered include the living windbreak, use of color in the garden, laying patios and paths, positioning plants according to their needs, a month-by-month garden calendar, and advice on over 150 plants which thrive in seaside gardens.

From the Author:
Tony and Marie Shaw are former colleagues of my late wife, Carol. About the time of her death they were in the process of changing careers and moving north to Lancashire to take over a village pub. Some years later, on holiday in Scotland, they saw a small cottage for sale, on the coast a few miles from Stranraer. They bought it and began searching for a book on seaside gardening to help with turning the windswept paddock that came with it into a garden. They could find nothing so, having enjoyed my book Gardening With Wild Plants, they had an idea. If I would design a garden for them, perhaps I could make another book out of it.
It was that idea and a visit to the cottage that combined with my experience of gardening with my grandmother on the south coast of England, along with observations and interviews with gardeners from Kent to Cornwall, from Pembroke to Southwold and from Scarborough to Blackpool that went into the creation of this book.
I hope it is both useful and inspiring to those who have the difficult but rewarding task of gardening on the coasts of Britain and beyond.
