Synopsis

The sinking of HMS Hood, pride of the Royal Navy, by the German battleship Bismarck off Iceland on 24 May 1941 is one of the most famous naval battles of WW2, and one of the most controversial. Previous accounts have criticised the actions of the British commander Admiral Holland, but this book explains the battle of the Denmark Strait in the light of extensive computer modelling of the action based on analysis of time and range data, correcting several discrepancies in earlier accounts. For example, it proves that the German ships, instead of pursuing a straight course throughout the battle as previously thought, actually made two major course changes, to which the British had to respond. It explains how the gunners aboard the Hood initially mistook the much smaller Prinz Eugen for the Bismarck and fired several salvoes at the wrong target before realising their mistake, and, most importantly, it correctly prints a series of photographs of Bismarck taken from her consort during the battle which had hitherto always been printed the wrong way round, correcting earlier misinterpretations of the ships' actions. The author also provides an appendix on naval gunnery. Also covering the entire Bismarck campaign, from the revival of the German Navy in the 1930s to the final destruction of the Bismarck three days later, this book provides a concise account of one of the most legendary campaigns in 20th-century naval history.
