In The Destruction of Memory, Robert Bevan examines the effects of conflict on architecture through a wide range of examples. These include the razing of Aztec cities by Cortez, the clashes between Islam and Hinduism in India, the Holocaust, the Chinese destruction of Tibetan Lhasa and the attack on the World Trade Center in New York. He argues that these incidents were not mere "collateral damage," as some might claim: they were deliberate acts of destruction, an attack not only on the architecture, but also on the cultural memory of a nation.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Crumbled shells of mosques in Iraq, the fall of the World Trade Center towers on September 11: when architectural totems such as these are destroyed by conflicts and the ravages of war, more than mere buildings are at stake. The Destruction of Memory reveals the extent to which a nation weds itself to its landscape; Robert Bevan argues that such destruction not only shatters a nations culture and morale but is also a deliberate act of eradicating a cultures memory and, ultimately, existence. Bevan highlights a range of wars and conflicts in which the destruction of architecture was pivotal. From Cortezs razing of Aztec cities to the carpet bombings of Dresden and Tokyo in World War Two to the war in the former Yugoslavia, The Destruction of Memory exposes the cultural war that rages behind architectural annihilation, revealing that in this subliminal assault lies the complex aim of exterminating a people. He provocatively argues for the fatally intertwined experience of genocide and cultural genocide, ultimately proposing the elevation of cultural genocide to a crime punishable by international law. In an age in which Frank Gehry, I. M. Pei and Frank Lloyd Wright have wide recognition and yet museums and temples of priceless value are destroyed in wars around the world, Bevan challenges the notion of collateral damage, arguing that it is in fact a deliberate act of war. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Seller Inventory # GOR005634308

Hardcover. Condition: Good. This passionate & original book investigates the ways in which a combatant may try to exterminate an 'enemy' not just by slaughter but by obliterating its culture. The threat to familiar objects is also a threat to identity, tothe collective memory which maintains a group's consciousness. The book studies conflict-driven cultural destruction across the world, in Latin America, Poland, Turkey, Afghanistan, but most especially in Bosnia. It concludes that itis not 'simple' hate but the deliberate intention to sever memory which led to the destruction of the Sarajevo Library, the smashing of Greek graveyards, the wrecking of the mosque at Ayodhya, & the razing of Warsaw in 1944-45.
