Synopsis
The concept of sustainable development has been around for thirty years, but is now an urgent topic. Starting from the idea of harvesting natural resources without depleting them, 'sustainable development' is now applied by environmentalists and governments alike to environmental policy as a whole - often arguing for central control to protect natural resources. This book argues that central planning will hinder, not help, the cause of sustainable development. Julian Morris and fifteen respected contributors - all specialists in their fields - assess the current international situation and the best strategy for the future. Like Bjorn Lomborg's The Skeptical Environmentalist - recently published and met with outrage by many - they argue that the doomsday view of the world is often hysterical, and wrong. Most renewable resources are in good shape, and major problems are often caused not by man but by natural processes.

About the Author
Julian Morris is co-director of International Policy Network abd a visiting professor at the University of Buckingham. An economist and lawyer, he is an expert in the role of institutions in economic growth and environmental protection. Professor Morris has written or edited numerous books and articles.
