Synopsis
Dream Road is a work on the Quinkin art body - one of he largest and most spectacular groups of rock paintings in the world. covering the caves and cliffs of the Gulf of Carpentaria the paintings range in age from 5,000 to over 13,000 years. Percy Trezise, who rediscovered the paintings discusses the history and significance of the works. His close involvement with the Aboriginal people of north Queensland allows him a rare insight into the religious and cultural background of the paintings. This book is illustrated and designed for those interested in Australian art, history and culture and for tourists visting Quinkin country. Also aimed at students, it trys to shatter the myth "terra nullius" and argues that Aboriginal people have lived there far longer than previously estimated.

About the Author
Percy Trezise has been studying Quinkin rock art for over thirty years and is the leading authority on the subject. He and Aboriginal artist Dick Roughsey have collaborated to write the popular Quinkin series of children's books. Tresize lives in Cairns, Qld.

The author's journey through Australia's Quinkin country on Cape York peninsula with its magnificent Aboriginal rock art began over 30 years ago. Accompanied by a friend, Aboriginal artist Dick Roughsey, Trezise started exploring the caves and shelters where images that included humans, stenciled hands, plants, animals, and spirits were painted in ochre on the sandstone walls. In addition to copying and photographing these paintings and engravings, they sought out local Aborigines whose legends could open up for them the culture from which these images emerged. The result is a multifaceted work presented in a genial, conversational style easily accessible to lay readers. It contributes much toward righting some of the injustices the Aborigines have suffered through the ignorance and arrogance of European colonists, who declared Australia terra nullius, an unoccupied continent.
