Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG. Photos, Art, Maps, Plans Diagrams (illustrator). 1st. When investigating the possibility of international passenger and freight aviation services NZ, isolated by its oceanic location, turned first to the flying boat. By the 1930s this form of transport had proven viable on long over-water routes. This important addition to NZ's aviation literature examines the introduction of commercial and military flying boats, while also the earlier fragile float-equpped aircraft, which were among the first seen in NZ skies. The first fully commercial services across the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean were in the formative stages of development when WWII intervened. However, the war saw many advances in the evolution of the flying boat and the re-introduction of civil services included a number of modified versions of these used in the post-war era. A collaborative effort by three NZ aviation historians led to this impressive volume which covers the fledgling days of water based aircraft, civilian and military uses, types operated, float planes for local services and water-related halicopter operations. The "Golden Age" for the flying boat was ended by the arrival of efficient and faster propellor passenger aircraft, followed by the jet airliners, on routes across the Tasman and in the Pacific. An essential in any NZ aviatiion book collection and now becoming scarce. First edition of 1997 from Random House, 320 pages including five appendices and bibliography. Illustrated lavishly with many b/w photos, some art, maps, plans and technical diagrams. Laminated colour hard covers with art by Ron Fulstow to front with five photos rear panel are VG+, light wear at spine base with a small stain top edge front board, repeated top edge FFEP, otherwise internally excellent, no inscriptions. DJ, which repeats ithe hard cover illustrations, is VG with small, unobtrusive stain front top edge. This large and heavy book (1.3kgs unpacked) would require additional postage, particularly for overseas delivery. Seller Inventory # 004770
