The basic text of this work is a discourse on the origin, history, and customs of Gypsies in general. Shorter essays cover the current status of Gypsy life in the countries between India and Ireland, their presumed migration route, and the location of the most sizable Gypsy populations. (The United States is not included, although there is a large U.S. Gypsy population.) Over 200 color photographs illustrate the similarities among Gypsies wherever they may live and the differences among those of various nations due to some acculturation.
