Although she is particularly well known for her early-20th-century period costumes, here she concentrates her remarkable talents on costumes designed over the past 50 years. Clancy weaves three trends that have influenced clothing styles?the move from neutral to bright colors, the increasing use of Lycra, and the emerging dominance of "street clothes" over couture?with three distinct fashion strands?high fashion, clothes for the masses, and "style tribes." Representative costumes are discussed and illustrated in the context of five-year segments beginning with 1945. Each segment has its own introduction and traces a wide range of topics (e.g., hair, fashion details, men's outer wear, etc.).
