Synopsis
Adele Olivia Gladwell's complex, challenging literary debut is a collection of short stories, prose-poems, and complementary essays, which confronts contemporary female issues using radical motifs of menstruation and abjection - a "beatific abyss of crimson issue".
Her fiction is spatial, drifting along crepuscular and surreal verges, often reflecting social insanity and sexual extremes. Within the contexts of subversion and fragmentation, she peels away the exuviae of female expression and experience to shed "small dark lights" on the gulfs between patriarchal and matriarchal, symbolic and imaginary, order and chaos; disclosing an epicene arena where Eros courts Thanatos and the animus plays lovers' games with the ego: all within the body of one woman.
The accompanying essays serve to further illuminate these mythic texts, divulging a poetic undercurrent to the language of textual/post-feminist theory, seeking to contextualize the schisms and drifts, open up non-linear concepts and bring socio-political and feminist themes into ultra-modern focus. Extending into music, performance, literature, art and film, the author inflames her subject matter with the visceral interpretations of her new mythology. Gladwell casts fresh light on films like "Last Tango in Paris" and "The Exorcist", songwriter/ performers such as Nick Cave and Michael Gira; and seminal female writers like Helene Cixous.
