Grade 2-4-- Charming full-color illustrations highlight these rather slight stories about the lifestyle of the animals cited in the title. Although basic events and needs (food, habitat) are discussed, information such as adult size and weight or the animal's life span is omitted. Other flaws include the lack of indexes and poorly organized and executed glossaries (referred to as "Some Special Words"). Finally, the events in each of these stories seem nearly interchangeable regardless of the animal under discussion. Readers are encouraged to observe the mouse, elephant, or squirrel mother as she mates, reproduces, and nurtures her young. The obvious predictability is apt to wear thin with most children. --J. J.
