Synopsis

1997 facsimile reprint of an 1897 book demonstrating the economic superiority of narrow gauge railways. Much of the book is focused on the Barsi Light Railway in India, the first of several 2' 6" gauge railways that eventually served the Indian sub-continent. Mr. Calthrop, who was also involved with the Leek & Manifold Valley Railway, here argues that this narrow gauge was ideal for carrying maximum tonnage at a minimum cost, utilizing a common axle loading of five tons for both locomotives and rolling stock. Illustrated with black and white photos. 34 pages.
