Synopsis
In 1945, the once-mighty German Wehrmacht was reduced to pathetic clusters of men in POW camps across Europe and Asia. Yet these forces were a superbly armed body of fighting men of incomparable quality. Why then did Hitler's army go down to such a devastating defeat? In this seminal work originally published in 1947, Milton Shulman explores this question based on his own experiences in Allied military intelligence and from testimony from captured senior Wehrmacht officers.

About the Author
Milton Shulman fought at Normandy as an Intelligence Officer with the Canadian Armoured Corps. After the war he interviewed many of the German Army's most senior generals, whose candid observations on their military performance, and the nature of the regime, form the substance of this book. After the war, Milton Shulman became known as a London theatre and film critic, a writer and novelist, and a political commentator of note. He was latterly editor of the London Evening Standard.
