Synopsis
This series of books offers an in depth guide to all aspects of brickwork and bricklaying practice. Gerard Lynch, author of the guide to "Guaged Brickwork", has put together these comprehensive and instructive volumes, linking past knowledge and practices with modern skills and materials, so that both can be fully examined and understood. At a time when the conservation and restoration of old buildings demand a more sympathetic handling, such a work should be a useful addition to the existing literature, and an essential source of reference for all those involved in the construction and repair of brick buildings. This volume begins with a background to the historical development of the brick, the craft of bricklaying and of brickwork from the 13th century to the present day. It then goes on to describe the modern manufacture of bricks along with their properties and classification. The book also includes chapters on mortars, tools and accessories along with an explanation of bricklaying skills, and comprehensive coverage of the techniques of bonding and its applications.

Review
These books are well researched, written and laid out. Although they are slanted towards the craftsman and craft trainee, there is sufficient information to give a valuable insight to architects, surveyors and other building professionals as well. EH Conservation Bulletin 'Lynch on Bricks' should become one of the standard textbooks for all building surveyors and architects. I certainly recommend it. Structural Survey Down to earth, easy to read manuals presented in a no nonsense, straightforward and clear manner.
