Taking Care of Harry - Hardcover

9781874082354: Taking Care of Harry
Mylie O'Farrell is 19 years old. By day he works as a health care assistant in a psychiatric unit in London. Off duty, he indulges his interest in music, girls and wild nights on the town with his friends, Janus and Rich, who share a ramshackle house in Westminster they call 'The Palace'. Everything changes when ex-army officer "Harry" is admitted to the Unit after purportedly trying to strangle his wife, Muriel.

Harry, who is suffering from melancholia, has no visitors so Mylie takes a special interest in the cantankerous old man. Through a series of stormy if humour-laden encounters, the young man and old man become friends, each allowing the other a glimpse into the deepest and most intimate secrets of their lives. This is also the story of the women in their lives, of Muriel and Tabi. As, little by little, Mylie realises that Harry is harbouring a secret terror, he sets about bringing this into the open so that his friend can be set free.

Powerful psychological drama of love and betrayal.  At times raucously comical, this novel is also suffused with great joy, sorrow, and a haunting sense of beauty - a funny, beautiful and poignant story that has inspired film makers and poets.

About the Author:
Frank Ryan is a distinguished and multiple-bestselling author, in the UK and US.   He is one of those rare writers who can write fluently and engagingly in both fiction and non-fiction.
Frank's new fantasy title, The Snowmelt River, was published in September 2010.  This is the John West Chosen Book for 2010.

His other fiction includes the thrillers, published by Hodder and Coronet, Goodbye Baby Blue and Tiger Tiger, which gathered fine reviews, including The Sunday Times, and found a readership of more than 300,000 in the UK alone, and his contemporary novels, Taking Care of Harry and Between Clouds and the Sea, explored the themes of mental illness and love in old age.  His books have been translated into many languages and have been the subject of more than a dozen television features and documentaries.  His science fiction novel, The Doomsday Genie, asks if the Genetic Age, with all of its potential for human good, might also bring with it a threat every bit as dangerous as the atomic bomb.
