Laurel Brunner and illustrator Zoran Jevtic show how the Internet has created an environment for new forms of social interaction, and provided free information access on all manner of topics from AIDS research to atomic bomb construction. This lively, fully illustrated work also investigates the moral issues which have come to the fore, including freedom of speech, copyright and censorship.

Grade 9 Up?Heavily illustrated with black-and-white drawings, this volume attempts to take readers through the maze that is the Internet. The author discusses what the Internet is and its origins; its language (the bits, bytes, and codes); and its servers, clients, software, and the wealth of products it offers. While the presentation succeeds on some levels, explanations of topics such as ftp servers, URLs, and browsers are confusing and/or incomplete. The black-and-white cartoons are occasionally distracting, unnecessary, or inappropriate. Every page or two takes up a different topic, identified in what appears to be a computer/Internet address box. The list of Internet bodies, authorities, and sites is a useful addition. The author also touches on the pros and cons of the Internet and potential problems in its future, particularly what will happen when the clocks get to 11:59:59 on December 31, 1999 (the time appears here as 12:59:59). Readers may come away from this book with unanswered questions or incomplete information, but teachers might use it as a springboard for discussion and further research into a subject that will only continue to grow in size and scope.?Linda Wadleigh, Oconee County Middle School, Watkinsville, GA
