Grade 4-8-- Two unexciting overviews of ancient civilizations. Aspects of Roman and Greek life are covered, giving accurate but sketchy information. Although the books emphasize the importance of Roman conquests and Greek trade respectively, neither one has any maps. Dates are mentioned within the texts, but even with the timelines, readers gain little sense of the progression of history. Roman gods and religion are not mentioned. The importance of farming in Greece is hardly touched upon. Some major figures are noted, but with no exploration of their personalities. A magnifying-glass symbol notes the process of scholarly research, with boxes that briefly describe how experts use artwork and artifacts to find out about ancient times. These insets are not particularly useful, especially since in some instances, there are no accompanying illustrations of the objects discussed. Both titles have some information students will need for reports, and the short chapters make it possible to track down some facts. Overall, however, they fail to generate any of the thrill of two fascinating periods. Odijk's Greeks and Romans (both Silver Burdett, 1989) provide clearer, more thorough information, while Cohen's Ancient Greece (Doubleday, 1990) is much more lively. --Steven Engelfried, Alameda County Library, CA
