This is a collection of writings by Tim Robinson. As well as ""Setting Foot on the Shores of Connemara"", the work includes ""Place/Person/Book"", Robinson's introduction to the Penguin Classics edition of Synge's ""The Aran Islands"". These pieces are written from the perspective of cartography, landscape interpretation, mathematics, art and writing. With the author, the reader explores Connemara, the Burren and Aran Islands, experiencing his initial impression of these islands and his rationale for mapping them in the early 1970s.

Artist Tim Robinson first set foot on the fabled Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland in the early 1970s, and before long he found himself put into service walking the island, recording all the details, and making maps. Taking to cartography, he eventually returned to the west coast of Ireland, what's known as Connemara, and continued prodigious walks, making maps, and writing essays. His writings about the stony, barren lands up against the raging Atlantic are highly evocative, and the wisdom he's picked up from the local inhabitants is both entertaining and inspiring.
