Book Description Soft Covers. Condition: VG+. No Jacket. Art, Photos, Map (illustrator). 1st Thus. Wives and mistresses of colonial governors of Tasmania provide the focus for this record of these women in the earliest settlement and development of Van Diemen's Land, where a convict colony was formed in 1803, in what is now Tasmania. The author has studied the lives of more than a dozen of these women and the contributions they made to the colony. While some (early) were from the lower stratas of contemporary society and others (later) from the British upper classes, the story of each makes for fascinating and absorbing reading, for their lot, in spite of the rank, was not easy. Some Governors had both wives and mistresses, some autocratic or eccentric and living conditions, particularly in the early days of settlement, were never easy. An engrossing account of a little explored aspect of colonial administration. First published by the Tasmanian Historical Research Association in 1987 under the title "Governor's Ladies ." this new edition of 1999. 251 pages including references, bibliography, list of eary people and events, index, b/w art illustrations throughout, few photos and documents, map.
