Synopsis
Scientists estimate that this "rather rare beast" in northern Arizona first erupted in A.D. 1064, and then on and off for a century and a half. Cinders from the final eruption, rusty red from the iron they contain, give the cone a sistinctive sunset glow, hence the name.
