Text: English, Norwegian (translation)
The House with the Blind Glass Windows is a searing look into a small Norwegian village ten years after World War II, viewed through the life of pre-adolescent Tora. Tora's stepfather Henrik - injured in the war, often drunk, and always angry - rapes her repeatedly. Although she longs to tell, she feels an undeserved guilt and knows that telling would only add another burden to her mother's difficult life. With regret we watch a chasm develop between Tora and her mother, even as Tora continually searches for hope. Her imagination becomes her powerful, if temporary, ally, a place where life holds promise. Her spirit is fed by three people: her aunt who, unaware of the abuse, consciously guides Tora; a teacher who provides inspiration in an otherwise stifling environment; and a young deaf-mute friend, another child who can't talk. The House with the Blind Glass Windows exposes the struggles of the whole village: the harsh realities of the fishing wharf, the humiliation of buying food on credit, the winter coldness of the tenement apartments, the lingering effects of German occupation. Herbjorg Wassmo brings the reader in touch with the villagers' daily battles and Tora's constant search for a safe, comforting world. -- For great reviews of books for girls, check out Let's Hear It for the Girls: 375 Great Books for Readers 2-14. -- From 500 Great Books by Women; review by Holly Smith
