This 2010 book shows how to design products for all aspects of manufacturability and use multifunctional product development teams and Concurrent Engineering principles to achieve the goals cited in the sub-title:
DESIGN FOR LOW COST. The book presents many effective methodologies to design low-cost products by concurrently engineering products in multifunctional teams that will simplify concepts, optimize architecture, optimize the use of modules and off-the-shelf parts, have pre-selected vendors help design custom parts, understand and avoid previous problems, and then thoroughly design for manufacturability for quick launches without expensive change orders.
DESIGN IN HIGH QUALITY. Chapter 10 shows how to design quality and reliability into the product with poka-yoke and 50 design guidelines.
DESIGN FOR LEAN MANUFACTURE. The book shows how to standardize parts and design products for lean production, JIT, build-to-order, and mass customization.
DESIGN QUICKLY FOR FAST PRODUCTION. Chapter 3 shows how thorough up-front work is the key to quickly developing products, avoiding changes, and achieving fast ramps.

The classic Design for Manufacturability, Optimizing Cost, Quality and Time-to-Market, is now in its sixth printing and is in use in more than 450 companies. Hewlett-Packard, United Technologies, and Loral each ordered more than 100 copies.
All companies that manufacture discrete products will benefit significantly from this book. It points out the importance of early concept/architecture decisions and that 60 percent of a products lifetime cumulative cost is committed by the concept phase. It presents a comprehensive list of design considerations to show design engineers all the factors that must be considered early in the design process by multiple-functional teams. The book presents a very effective methodology for part standardization that I have been recommend to my consulting clients for years. I used this technique at Intel's Systems Group and reduced the approved list of 20,000 parts to 500 preferred parts.
To discourage engineers from re-inventing the wheel, I created "Anderson's Law" which states that designers should "Never design a part that is available from a catalog." The book has a hundred practical guidelines like "avoid right/left hand parts" and "design parts with symmetry." In the chapter on designing in quality, I created graphs and formulas that show the effect of part quality and quantity on product quality to encourage engineers to specify high quality parts and simplify complex designs.
