Synopsis
Pahrump, Nevada, is located west of Las Vegas in a beautiful desert valley with vast land and water resources, clear air, and plenty of sunshine. For thousands of years, Pahrump's magnificent free-flowing springs have sustained a number and variety of cultures: prehistoric hunters and gatherers, the Southern Paiute, and finally white settlers who came in search of opportunity in the last half of the nineteenth century.
The settlers' attempts to develop the valley included the raising of alfalfa and grain to feed livestock; growing fruits and vegetables for local consumption; and cultivating cotton, which became king during the golden agricultural period from the 1950s until 1970. But all of these attempts were only briefly successful. Today, however, Pahrump stands on the threshold of its destiny: to become a lovely city that offers its inhabitants a salubrious climate, plenty of open space, and clear air and water.
This book, one of a series on the history of all major Nye County communities, is based on published sources as well as the recently collected oral histories of people who have an extensive and intimate knowledge of the history of Pahrump.
