Paolo Uccello, Domenico Veneziano and Andrea del Castagno, "the first champions of the new order", lived in one of the richest and most complex centuries in the history of the Italian civilization. The Quattrocento was a period of extraordinary importance in the history of the civilization of Florence. Having survived the terrible Black Death of 1348, in the 15th century Florence experienced a new social and political reality that fostered rapid progress. The tangible evidence of the beginning of this new period of peace and economic prosperity was the growing number of works of art commissioned by public organizations. This book outlines some of the features that are common to these three artists making them representatives of the spirit and the art of the Renaissance. It observes the parallel development of their careers and helps us to understand the personality of each artist.
