In the third volume of Rose's "False Messiah" trilogy, Matthew Lenart, member of a wealthy Minneapolis newspaper family, narrates the confused Gatsby-like story of Gordon Charles Abul, the handsome, enigmatic son of Sephardic Jewish merchants who stole Matt's wife years before. After the sudden, unexplained murders of Gordie's wife and mother, Matt discards his musing tone and ruthlessly tracks him to Chicago. Gordie's unorthodox life there veers between an eccentric society set and an even stranger cast of characters to whom he recites aloud the pornographic portions of the writings of the Marquis de Sade. Into all this are injected references to Israeli espionage that might explain both the murders and the company Gordie keeps in Chicago. Confused, disjointed, and not recommended.
