Gr. 1-4. Fans of Bunnicula, Harold and Chester, and Pinky and Rex are in for a treat with this easy-to-read, thoughtful autobiography, part of the Meet the Author series. Howe explains how he began using words humorously as a child to win the attention of his three older brothers, never thinking that one day this talent would become his career. He shares with readers a day in the life of a writer, stressing the importance of reading, daydreaming, and jotting down notes. He tells about his life in Hastings-on-Hudson, where he lives with his wife and daughter in a supportive community that is home to many people involved with the arts. As do most writers, he spends lots of time researching in libraries, museums, and bookstores. And the best thing is that he loves his work. Sharp color photos on almost every page document Howe's story and provide insight into the behind-the-scenes life of a popular wordsmith, whose latest book is reviewed below. Deborah Abbott
