Loper grew up in the 1920s in Wilmington, Delaware, and he had an unusual desire to define the world around him by drawing and painting pictures. Although angered by the considerable obstacles racism placed at the doorsteps of African-Americans, Loper drew on the support of a strong extended family. Through his paintings, he defined his world, but most importantly, he defined himself.
