Book by Day, Samuel H.

This autobiography is interesting both as a case study of one man's evolution into an antinuclear activist and as an investigation of the elaborate American machinery of nuclear weapons testing, production, deployment, and justification. With a tone of bemusement, Day describes his metamorphosis from privileged youngster and comfortable editor/journalist to activist and inmate in middle age. Especially informative is his discussion of his experiences at The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists and The Progressive , two journals that have challenged government secrecy regarding nuclear weapons. Like many peace activists, Day sometimes resorts to cliche and sentimentality, but he rightly points out that even in post-Cold War America, it is still true that nuclear weapons have changed everything but our way of thinking.
