Synopsis
Translation Theory and Practice in the Middle Ages is a collection of essays derived from a symposium conducted as part of the Twenty-Eighth International Congress on Medieval Studies (Kalamazoo, 6-9 May 1993). Topics examined in the symposium and reflected in this collection include Translation and Authority, Translation and Gender, Translation and Literality, Translation in Contexts of Bilingualism, and Modern Translations of Medieval Texts. The volume concludes with two essays that consider modern translations of works from the Middle Ages, the romances of Chrtien de Troyes. The essays reveal, according to the editor, that the theory and practice of translation continue to stimulate the same debates and display the same preoccupations that were evident in the theory and practice of translation in the Middle Ages.-from the Introduction
