Summarizes and reviews films addressing such social issues as racism, poverty, political oppression, and environmental destruction, and includes documentaries, foreign films, and Academy award winners

Film critic and social activist Hiatt offers one-page critical summaries of both classic ( Intolerance ) and modern ( Come See the Paradise ) motion pictures on such topics as race, war, and poverty, with mixed results. Although broad in scope, the collection scants some areas (e.g., lesbian/gay films) in favor of others (e.g., World War II films). In addition, while Hiatt includes neglected features from around the world, the reader will not find such major works as Shoah or Seven Beauties . Still, this is a useful companion to Kevin Brownlow's Behind the Mask of Innocence ( LJ 10/15/90), Amos Vogel's Film as a Subversive Art ( LJ 9/15/74), and the numerous excellent topical studies. Recommended for public and academic libraries supporting video collections.
