Puritanism, as a Christian attitude and conviction regarding faith, service and doctrinal purity, can be dated to the 1550's. The Puritans were known as scholars and theologians who thought that the Protestant Reformation, and subsequently, the Church of England, had not gone far enough in purging out the leaven of papacy and Roman Catholicism.
These churchmen sought to further reform the church to teach and preach only the Gospel of Jesus Christ and biblical truths as set forth in the New Testament and further declared in the Pauline Revelation.
Although some Puritans were involved in the work of the King James Bible, the King disliked the Puritans and threateded to exterminate them; therefore, they were among those who first came to the new land seeking religious freedom.
Puritans like John Adams, John Harvard, and Johnathan Edwards were instrumental in forming the educational, governmental and spiritual foundations of the United States.
This book of devotions by some of the most noted Puritans in history are daily reminders that we must return to our foundational roots if America is to prosper and endure.

I.D.E. Thomas is the author of a number of books, the most popular being "The Golden Treasury of Puritan Quotations" and "The Omega Conspiracy." He was reared and educated in Wales, United Kingdom. After pastoring three churches in that land he is now the senior minister of a church in California. He has served for 25 years as a commentator for the B.B.C. (British Broadcasting Corporation). He is also the chancellor of a theological seminary in California, and has opened eight extension seminaries in the Orient.
Dr. Thomas, in comprising this book, has read books and sermons by over 90 Puritan authors. Some of these authors were prolific in their output. It is claimed that John Flavel wrote 29 books, John Owen 80 books, and Richard Baxter-Mr. Puritan himself-no less than 168 books. Baxter was the most prolific writer of the 17th century. One writer states that his works include over 60 million words! A number of these books were written by Baxter when he was on horseback going to preach in various towns and cities. He used a poor goose quill pen and had installed an inkwell in his saddle.
Dr. Thomas quotes from authors all the way from Thomas Adams, Joseph Alleine, and Isaac Ambrose, down to Thomas Watson, John Wells, and George Whitlock. Many of these books became famous throughtout the English speaking world, and other countries as well. One of John Bunyan's books has been translated into over 300 languages. The most famous of the authors were undoubtedly Richard Baxter, John Bunyan, John Milton, John Owen, Thomas Watson, William Gurnall, and Samuel Rutherford.
The original draft of this manuscript was made on a computer by his secretary Annette Castanos in Los Angeles. The cover artwork was designed by Eric Ferguson (Oklahoma City) and Noriko Kobayashi (Tokyo).
