PreSchool-Grade 2-- This is an exciting and appealing adventure into the world of numbers that few children will be able to resist. Starting with very basic concepts such as matching and sorting, Heinst moves readers toward more complex operations such as counting, adding, and subtracting. The fun and cleverness here lies in the dynamic, bright, full-color photographs and detailed acrylic artwork that show the different mathematical operations; Asian twins illustrate pairs, while a bookcase of toys demonstrates the concept of sorting. Similar to Oliver's Numbers (Random, 1990), this title goes one step further by combining familiar, everyday things with smiling, multiethnic boys and girls to help depict >- concepts. Key questions are intermingled with the illustrations to promote discussion. Oversized, double-page spreads are divided into subjects and are headed by large-type print to help children identify categories as well as recognize vocabulary. For individual use or group learning, this is a dazzling, much-needed, and fresh approach to mathematics.
